25 years of gigging:
Cigar Box Scott's unique take on roots music fuses traditional folk music with rock and blues inspired rhythms. He creates original interpretations of old songs, performing new arrangements on electric cigar box guitar and his homemade amplified foot stompbox. His gigs cover a wide range of styles and songs ... don't be surprised to hear everything from Appalachian folk songs and Johnny Cash covers to blues songs and onto the Rolling Stones, and much more!
In addition to performing as Cigar Box Scott, Scott Atkinson also plays steel guitar in the Dayton area folk trio The Barnharts.
Scott has been playing solo and in bands for over 25 years. Although his passion is traditional folk and roots music, he’s played in bands spanning alt-country, rock, bluegrass, blues, and original contemporary folk music. He plays bass, electric lap steel guitar, Dobro, bass, and mandolin.
Scott’s solo gigs these days revolve around electric cigar box guitar and amplified foot stomp box for a strong rhythm. During a set he’ll also pull out electric lap steel or Dobro, banjo, and guitar.
About Scott:
I love traditional music. Call it what you will: roots music, folk songs, bluegrass, blues, old-timey, traditional … doesn’t matter, I love it all. The melodies, the instruments, the stories behind them, how they’ve evolved over the years.
And, I love to reinvent them. This is songwriting for me, adding my creative stamp to these songs.
I play solo: cigar box guitar plus an amplified “foot stomper” to add the beat. I also will pull out guitar, mandolin, banjo, dobro, and electric lap steel.
For other sounds, I also play with the Dayton-area band The Barnhart Band and York, Pa-based High Point Ramblers (HPR).
