Profile: Scott Atkinson

There are two constants in Scott’s career and passions: Music & Marketing. (And family … but that’s a whole other story …)

Scott Atkinson’s career has spanned everything from working as the Managing Editor of the non-profit Sing Out! Folk Music Magazine to managing the entire web site portfolio for a $2B corporation, with many stops along the way in direct marketing, eCommerce, catalogs & direct mail, independent marketing consultancy and even making some money as a musician here and there.

With My Music Styles he’s combining those two passions into a site that helps fans find great music and also helps musicians and others in the “biz” side get the word out using digital marketing strategies.

A fan of all styles of music, Scott’s tastes do run to the “rootsy” side of things, so don’t be surprised to see a lot here about blues, bluegrass, folk music, country, and Americana.

A long-time avid music enthusiast, Scott does have a few music credentials under his belt. He worked for the original folk music journal, Sing Out! Folk music magazine from 2000 - 2006, first as an intern then hired after graduating college in late 2000 and then as Managing Editor from 2002 - 2006. At Sing Out!, Scott was able to feed his appetite for finding new music and really had his horizons broadened. That pure wonder at the huge number of artists and styles out there has stayed with him ever since and is definitely one of the drivers behind My Music Styles . He went to festivals and gatherings all over the country (and drug his wife and young family with him more often than not), and to this day cherishes those memories.

After a while, though, feeding a family via folk music journalism just wasn’t cutting it, so Scott took his editorial skills to Corporate America where he quickly moved into direct marketing and then digital marketing and eCommerce. He’s worked for both big and small companies and has done a lot of consulting, helping others build their web presence.

Not just a listener but also a music maker, Scott plays Dobro, guitar, harmonica, bass and likes to mess around on just about anything with strings.
